2006 Race Results
Race Weekend #17:
Our last visit to Riverside Speedway was a short one. On Friday, October
13th, the #72 Sportsman just got better and better during practice.
Shawn drew 4th for the first heat and won! Rewarding Shawn with the Pole
for the 50 lap feature. Shawn led the first 4 laps and then a car was
stopped on the track in the middle of turn 3 & 4. No caution was thrown
and Shawn slammed on the brakes to hopefully avoid the car when his
wheel cylinder blew and Shawn had no brakes. Shawn rammed into the car
and wrecked his nose, hood, radiator, front bumper, etc, etc. With too
much wrecked to bother trying to fix it for Saturday, that was the end
of Shawn's 2006 season.
Race Weekend #16:
Shediac's Centre for Speed couldn't have asked for any better weather
for their Atlantic Canadian Speedweekend Championships. Maybe Mother
Nature was making up for last year ;) Shawn raced on Saturday only with
the #72 Sportsman. We had a difficult day with one thing after another
plaguing the team. The car was very loose all day the same as most
everybody else. Shawn drew 11th for the 2nd heat, with only the top 3
cars qualifying for the race. Shawn made it up to 4th but couldn't quite
get by the 3rd place car because the car was so loose. Shawn then
started on the pole of the 2nd semi and won. He started 14th in the main
and finished 4th, not without getting sandwiched and having a left rear
flat and having to pit however. When he changed his left rear tire it
did tighten up the car and the #72 was on the move. Shawn made it up to
4th and unfortunately with two cautions within the last ten laps of the
race, race control didn't pull the lapped cars. So even though Shawn was
in 4th it looked like he was in something like 10th. Too bad for the
fans, would've have been a more exciting finish if the top cars would've
had the opportunity to race against each other for the win. I think
Brian Gillespie pretty much had it tied up anyway ;)

Race Weekend #15:
On Friday, September 15th, Shawn drove Craig Slaunwhite's #99 Sportsman
to a 2006 Scotia Speedworld Points Championship, definitely not in
winning style however as the rear-end broke just over halfway through
the feature. Craig still had a strong enough point lead to hang on to
the Championship even though Shawn didn't get to finish the race. With
Shawn's luck this year I'm surprised Craig asked him to drive it while
he was in Loudon, New Hampshire watching the Cup race ;) Shawn's bad
luck continued on Saturday at Riverside Speedway (site of Shawn's first
win earlier this season - our 1 good race) when he was involved in the
largest car pile-up I've ever seen during the feature. Shawn's car,
along with many others was in very rough shape however the pit crew
worked hard and got it out on the track for a few laps to gain a few
positions. Considering how much money we've spent this year, this may
have been our last pro stock race for the season. I'll be sure to keep
you updated.

Race Weekend #14:
Back at Scotia once again for the last time of the season. The Carquest
Maritime Pro Stock Tour's Parts for Trucks 200 was yet another survival
race with caution after caution. Shawn did well time trialing 3rd
fastest and drew 6th to start in the Dash. He finished 3rd and was in an
excellent spot to start the race. Shawn like many others survived a
number of cautions right off the bat and then with only a few laps
remaining before the mandatory halfway pit stop got caught up in a pile
up on the front stretch. Amazingly, everyone got going and the caution
didn't fly, Shawn was at the back and the leader was coming. Thank god
for the halfway point! However, it would prove fruitless in the end when
Shawn got banged up in one of the many cautions that followed.
Race Weekend #13:
The big Irving Oil 250 weekend at NBIS in the Geary woods proved to be a
huge crowd event once again with over 500 campers staying at the track I
believe. Friday night's corn boil was awesome with great corn to keep
the fans warm in the chilly night temperatures. Saturday night's O'Leary
Pontiac 150 Sportsman race was a definite let down for Shawn and the
team. With 45 competitors all tempting to qualify in the 26-spot race
(two of which are provisionals) it was a challenge to qualify if you had
a bad draw. Shawn did just that and also had a bad car. The #72
Sportsman was wheel-hopping like crazy and was near impossible for Shawn
to get around the track. We later discovered the right rear shock was
loose and about to fall off, something so silly we shoould have thought
of ah well. Shawn plans to head back to Fredericton on September 24th
for another big Sportsman race, hopefully we can get into this one.
On Sunday Shawn's luck wasn't much better. He once again had a horrible
draw and did not qualify through racing. The car was great in practice
and then awful during the heat/consi. Shawn made it in on a provisional
and started the Irving Oil 250 in 26th. The car improved during the race
(since we had changed tires) and Shawn made it up to 4th. This year's
Irving Oil 250 was most definitely a survival race that we didn't end up
surviving. With a number of problems including the oil light flashing,
the clutch slipping, and a bad set of tires, it wasn't a great night,
but as we always say, it could've been worse :)
Race Weekend #12:
On Saturday, August 26th, the Carquest Maritime Pro Stock Tour made
their last stop to Shediac's Centre for Speed for the season. Shawn
started the day off well time trialing 2nd fastest with a time of
14.397. Unfortunately, he drew 8th position to start in the Dash and
finished 10th. The race didn't go as well with a few of the usual
problems, Shawn ended up 11th.
Race Weekend #11:
We did this this and this good, and then we
won!!! Wow, what a track! The new and improved Riverside
Speedway is definitely something for every race fan to see, we can't say
enough about what a good job John Chisholm & his crew have done with the
place, it is gorgeous! Well, Shawn finally did it, he got his first
Maritime Pro Stock Tour win at the Antigonish
Mall 200 on August 19th and what a win it was! The night
couldn't have been any better. The weather was perfect, the place was
packed, and the action on the track was intense! Shawn time trialed 4th
quickest and said the car was dialed in, awesome, now we just need some
luck. Shawn drew the outside poll for the dash and finished 3rd, placing
him 3rd for the lineup for the Main feature. He fell back to 6th and
then stayed in 4th for quite a while. After the mandatory pit stop,
Shawn went back out on the track with determination. He caught Rollie
MacDonald and George Koszculics and stayed with them for quite some
time. Rollie unfortunately lost his power steering so the the race was
between George and Shawn. Shawn chased George for many laps and then
finally got him on the outside with 30 laps to go, even a caution with
two laps to go wouldn't see Shawn give up the lead! Nothing like a
Green, White, Checkered to get the fans on their feet! YAHOO!!!!

Race Weekend #10:
The Atlantic Cat 250 weekend proved to be an interesting one, there was
definitely some high & low points. Friday night Shawn raced his #72
Sportsman car in the Lockhart 100 and started out well, leading 30 laps
until his buddy, Craig Slaunwhite (who Shawn has been giving a hand with
his car) passed him for the lead and hung on to it. All in all a great
race to watch and a good night. Shawn also qualified with the Pro Stock
in the PASS Qualifiers. He drew the Poll for the 2nd heat and finished
4th. On Saturday, August 12th, the #0 Atlantic Cat car wasn't bad but
could have been better. Unfortunately it rained before the main feature
and got very cold and damp for the many fans that made it out for the
show. Shawn started 11th for the Atlantic Cat 250 and like a lot of
local guys, didn't have the car to compete with the Americans. Shawn got
a number of laps down and parked the car halfway through the race to
save from getting wrecked. Later in the week, it was discovered at the
shop that both rear shocks had gone bad. With only two cars on the lead
lap at the end of the race, we didn't feel so bad.

Race Weekend #9:
The MPST Carquest 100 at New Brunswick
International Speedway on August 5th was definitely a race
where drivers were giving nothing. No room, no lane, just driving hard.
We certainly felt the effects of it a number of times over.
Unfortunately, we didn't have a good start to the night when Shawn's
right front bleeder stuck open and leaked air out of the tire. Shawn
only took one lap in qualifying and started last in the first heat. He
finished 5th and consequently started 19th in the Main Feature. Yikes!
Near the back - not where we want to be...However the car was pretty
decent and Shawn was making his way up through the pack when he ran into
trouble trying to pass another driver. The driver drove down
into him sending them both spinning around in the middle of turn 3 & 4.
So back to the back we go. OK,
we've been here before, we can make it back up through again. The car is
still good. Oh no, Shawn drove into a crash that was right in front of
him on the front stretch and what do we hear on the radio? Shawn says
there is blood all over his hand and he has to get out of the car. The
paramedics take him into the ambulance and Curtis goes to get the car.
Luckily, the car didn't need towed, the damage was mostly cosmetic.
Shawn escapes with just a deep gauge in his knuckle and it turns out -
torn ligaments in his hand. He was still able to
drive, thank god. Back out again with no fenders, no nose, and no
shroud, no problem right? I think I started to get deja vu at this
point... Anywho, let's take you to the last couple of laps when Shawn is
attempting to pass for something like 10th position.
Two laps to go, a couple of drivers get into it and Shawn ends up in the beach but gets 'er
going to cross the finish line. Wow, I wish we could get past all this
drama! Has anyone else noticed how long these race reports have gotten?
I can't wait to write: We did this this and this good, and then we won!
How terrific would that be!!! Well not this week, we finished 15th.

Race Weekend #8:
On Saturday, July 22nd, the Carquest Maritime Pro Stock Tour made their
second and last stop to Raceway Park in PEI for the season. We weren't
looking forward to PEI because of our history there but surprisingly,
the car wasn't bad. Our crew chief Curtis Lindsey assured me we had a
completely different setup this time around and things could only get
better - well the car did but things didn't. Shawn qualified 17th,
started 4th in the first heat, and finished 4th in the first heat.
Therefore, he started 17th for the Carquest 100 Main Feature. Shawn was
making out ok, for about 6 laps when everyone checked up, sending a
number of cars to the pits, including Shawn. The pit crew had lots of
time to fix the hood and nose and it's a good thing too, because they
definitely needed fixing. Shawn was sent back out at the back of the
pack and once again started his journey to the front. Well he never made
it there as another driver lost their temper and intentionally put Shawn
into the wall hard. Wonderful. A lapped car whose not even running for
points with no real reason for revenge ruins our night, causes a LOT of
damage, and takes us out of the race. Not a very respectful thing to do.
Oh well, at least we have two weeks to fix it, which is what we'll need.
Shawn ended up 21st.

Race Weekend #7:
On Friday, July 14th Shawn finally had his #72
Sportsman car out for a test run at Scotia Speedworld. It was
only a weekly 25 lap race but the car handled fairly well and didn't
fall apart, which was the main purpose of the night to do a quick
shake-down. With only five laps of practice, and starting near the back
of the pack, he made out ok with a final 5th place finish. Watch for
Shawn in upcoming Sportsman races around the Maritimes, there is no set
schedule but if we plan to attend a race I will try to post it. Don't
forget Shawn's Sportsman is FOR SALE! Any interested buyers are
encouraged to contact Shawn.

On Saturday, July 15th the Maritime Pro Stock Tour
visited Shediac's Centre for Speed. It wasn't as hot as it
may have been in other places around the Maritimes and thank god! There
was a nice breeze off the ocean all day. The #0 Atlantic Cat car was
good in practice and Shawn time trialed 5th fastest. Shawn drew 9th for
the Dash and finished 8th. Shawn started the race on the outside and
drifted where he was for the first 45 laps until the first caution. The
car was much too loose so Shawn came in to get it tightened up.
Unfortunately, the crew went a little too far with their adjustments and
had to come in again to do one more stop. This time, the car was decent
and Shawn slowly picked his way up through the field. With about 10 laps
to go Shawn was passing Flemming on the outside for 6th position when in
Turn 4 Flemming got into some water and didn't quite turn. This resulted
in Flemming accidentally hitting Shawn and shooting him off into grass.
Shawn kept the car going and finished as the last car on the lead lap in
12th position. Next up: Raceway Park in PEI.

Race Weekend #6:
On July 8th, Shawn had his first top five finish of the 2006 season in
the Carquest 100 at Scotia Speedworld. It was a lucky finish where it
paid to be restarting on the inside after cautions. During practice the
car was weak. The handling was either one way or the other with no split
down the middle. The boys couldn't figure out what the problem was until
after the final practice session. While going over the car a crew member
discovered a loose tierod on the right front. This resulted in checking
the toe on the car. It was toed out one inch and a quarter, which is
about an inch and an eigth too much. That's why the car was so tight!
Shawn then time trialed 10th fastest and started 7th in the heat. He
finished 8th and that's where he started the main feature. Everyone
else's bad luck was good for us during this race! Although they
discovered a problem, the car was still not great. Hopefully we'll have
better luck at Shediac's Centre for Speed.

Race Weekend #5:
Canada Day was celebrated this year on Prince Edward Island at
Raceway
Park in Oyster Bed Bridge. The Parts for Trucks 100 took place on a
beautiful Saturday night and was hoorah! done at 9:30pm. It's too bad
the car was such a handful all day and night for Shawn. He qualified
17th, won the heat race, started 11th and finished 14th. The day
could've been worse but my god it could've been better too. Let's just
say we were glad the race got over so quickly and that we're heading
back to Scotia this coming weekend for the Carquest 100. Be sure to see
the #0 Atlantic Cat car at the Burnside location of Carquest friday at
lunch! We'll be there too :)

Race Weekend #4:
The PASS Forbes 200 at Scotia Speedworld
scheduled for Saturday, June 24th, was rained-out (I can't
believe we've had ANOTHER rainy weekend!). Since the rest of our summer
and their's is pretty well booked up there is no obvious date to hold it
so the jury is still out on that one. Next up: PEI at Island Speedway in
Oyster Bed Bridge!!! Yeeha, Happy Canada Day! Join us in the campground
for a drink after the race ;)
Race Weekend #3:
The Parts for Trucks 100 at NBIS on June 17th
proved to be a long one with 15 cautions. Shawn had a great car, maybe
even the best car on the track but no luck. He time trialed 4th fastest,
drew a 10th place start in the Dash, and finished 9th. Great! Starting
on the inside - that's what we were hoping for. He was in the lead by
lap 37 and passed Flemming on the outside to capture it. What an awesome
car we had! Shawn led for about 20 laps and then unfortunately spun
around from oil that was all over the track in the middle of turn 1 & 2.
Officials then sent Shawn to the back (even though he wasn't involved in
the caution but spun because of it). Oh well, we've been here
before...Shawn had some trouble working his way to the front but ended
up in a decent 7th place finish. I think it definitely could have been a
better night for us, but I suppose it could have been worse :) Still
lots of racing left this season, we've only just begun! Next up: PASS
Forbes 200 at Scotia Speedworld this Saturday.

Race Weekend #2:
On June 11th, the rain-delayed Maritime Pro
Stock Tour Carquest 100 finally took place. Wanting to be
sure the race got completed, officials opted to skip time trials and a
few practice sessions before the heats. Since there was no time trials,
the top ten in points from last year drew for positions in the Dash.
Shawn drew the pole and held on to it during the Dash despite hardy
attempts by other drivers to snag it away. He didn't hang on to it for
long during the feature however, as Gordie Ryan passed him on the first
lap. The car was obviously not what it could be and the rest of the race
was a struggle. Shawn fell back as far as 7th partly because of bad
handling but also because of the outside groove being poor. Things were
not too bad as Shawn drifted from 7th to 5th, however on around lap 74,
there was a caution and Shawn's MSD Box broke, resulting in the car
stalling and him having to be pushed into the pits. We were able to
switch boxes and get back out without losing a lap. Shawn stayed on the
lead lap for the remainder of the race and finished around 11th, but not
without damage to the car. The boys will be busy this week preparing for
Fredericton!

Race Weekend #1 for 2006:
Finally the April 29th Oxford Plains Weekend came! Our trip to the
States for our first American race wasn't all bad, however it wasn't all
good either. Shawn wasn't totally off the pace in practice, until a
power steering line blew and the car caught on fire. Not to worry, the
#0 Pit crew quickly got the fire out, cleaned it up, and sent him back
out in the next and last practice session of the day. The car was not as
good as we would have liked, but drivable, until Shawn went out to start
8th in the 3rd heat (by draw) and the transmission broke. No 2nd gear.
Uh oh. Luckily...we borrowed a transmission and made it out for the 2nd consi. Shawn started last and made it up to 6th (they took the top five)
but just couldn't get by that 5th place car. Not exactly the way we
hoped our first American race would go, but Shawn got the experience he
needed to come back at the end of July and race the famed Banknorth
Oxford 250. Now we have lots of time to prepare for our next race on
June 3rd at Scotia Speedworld.
