Final Race Weekend #15 for 2005:
Finally the Atlantic Stock Car Championships
was at least somewhat completed on October 22nd
at Shediac's Centre for Speed. The Sportsman count was high
with 47 cars trying to qualify for the Midland Courier 100. With only
three heats and one last chance qualifier - just seven cars out of each
qualifying race would make it. Shawn started 6th in the 2nd heat and was
able to finish in a comfortable 2nd place, putting him on the starting
grid in 5th position. Once the green flag was dropped it wasn't long
before Shawn found himself in 2nd place trying desperately to find a way
by the #88 Todd Tufts. That guy was blocking with everything he had in
him because he knew with just one slip up Shawn would whiz by with the
faster car. Thank god Brian Gillespie showed up in the #69 to complicate
matters for Tufts. Tufts couldn't hold back the both of them and
eventually let Gillespie by on the inside. Then a caution came out
letting Shawn and Gillespie run away with the two top positions.
Gillespie slipped up in turn four and Shawn scooted by underneath taking
the lead and hanging onto it for the final 10 laps. What a race!!!
Although it was freezing cold all day long it certainly made the trip
worth it to get our only win in 2005!
The Pro Stock Championships have been postponed until 2006.

Race Weekend #14:
The last points weekend was a crazy one, as usual, with some ups and
downs, at Scotia Speedworld on Saturday,
September 10th, 2005. Shawn raced both the #72 Sportsman and
the #0 Pro stock car. We started out the pro stock day by qualifying 2nd
fastest and drawing 7th position in the dash. Early on in that race,
Shawn was on the inside of the #11 car but unfortunately, wasn't given
any room and some damage was done. Shawn ended up pulling off and having
to fix the right front fender - meaning he would be starting 10th in the
main. Shawn then noticed a rear end leak by his left rear tire on the
sportsman car. The axle bearing was destroyed and immediately had to be
replaced. Shawn just made the 2nd heat in his sportsman car and
qualified for the main feature 50-lapper. During that race Shawn
survived a few sketchy cautions at the start and then pulled away in
2nd place - unable to catch Mel Tibert.
That was where they finished and after a number of toss and turns in
tech, the rightful place owners were rewarded for their finishes. The
Parts for Trucks 200 was a slippery one with a lot of guys spinning
around - including Shawn. Shawn was in 5th place at the time of the
mandatory caution halfway, and drew 1st position to start on the poll
for the 2nd half! Shawn held onto the lead for
over 35 laps until he quickly went around in turn 4. Whether
it was oil or water, something on the track made the #0 Atlantic Cat car
go around in no time at all. Shawn then started at the back and was
carefully working his way back up to the front when he made a mistake in
turn 2 which put him a lap down. In the end, Shawn had a great run and a
fun season, wish we could have gotten a win but there is always next
year ;)

Race Weekend #13:
Speedweekend 2005 at New Brunswick
International Speedway was a blast! There is no better way to
spend your Labour Day weekend than at a race track that is
well-organized, has good food, and is packed full of major race fans! On
Saturday, September 3rd, the #72 Sportsman race team competed in the
O'Leary Pontiac Excitement 150. With a
bad draw of last in his heat, Shawn ran into problems early when trying
to avoid a crash he got sucked into the muddy beach in turns 3 & 4. Once
he was towed out his clutch was slipping so bad he had to pull into the
pits. With just enough time, they changed the clutch and Shawn made it
out for the first last consi of the day. After winning that, Shawn
started the main feature in the 21st position out of 24 cars. By half
way, he was in third place and still going strong. Shawn quickly found
himself in the lead and lapping cars slowly but surely until one car
just wouldn't get out of the way. Shawn thought he had a hole and was
just underneath the lapped car when he came down on Shawn and spun out.
This lead to Shawn having to go to the back with only 41 laps left in
the race. Everyone thought he could do it, but after being blocked in
behind some slower running cars, Shawn ran out of time to earn his lead
back and ended up finishing 7th. An
exciting and well-run race in the end.

The acclaimed Irving Oil 250 on September 4th
was a long race early on that eventually led to some nice green-flag
racing near the end. Shawn had a great draw for the Pole in the 3rd heat
and easily won the race giving him the 3rd starting position on the
grid. Scott Chubbock #20, Travis Benjamin #17, and Shawn were by far the
fastest cars in the race for the majority of the race, easily pulling
away on the many restarts and sticking pretty close together through the
green flag laps. Shawn was in 2nd place when he was fast approaching the
#54 Dave Dion who was being lapped when something on Dion's car broke in
turn 2 and Shawn ran into the back of him, bringing out the caution.
Shawn pitted and at that time decided it was a good time to change all 4
tires and fuel up. Heading back out onto the field, Shawn's car was just
as fast as before as he began moving back up to the front. Slowly the
car faded and with 30 laps to go and in 2nd spot, the Atlantic CAT team
decided to pit again and change back to the 4 tires we had on previously
in hopes of making the car better. Shawn started
4th on the restart and unfortunately,
the car wasn't any better so that's where he stayed. All in all, a
decent weekend for the Shawn Turple crew, with two fast cars and just a
little bit of a lack of that luck of maybe being in the right place at
the right time.

Race Weekend #12:
The Antigonish Mall 100 at Riverside
Speedway went by in a flash with only one caution and Rollie MacDonald
leading the whole race! The Atlantic CAT team wasn't very fast all day
and couldn't quite get the set up we needed to qualify in the top ten.
Shawn started the race in 19th position and only made it in 12 laps when
the rear end broke! Crappy :( So I guess we had our bad week and
finished last. Ah well, can't complain too much, we've been
lucky so far mechanically this year.

Race Weekend #11:
The Atlantic Dodge Dealers 100
took place at Shediac's Centre for Speed on
Saturday, August 20th with a full field of 33 cars attempting
to qualify for the 27-car race. We started the day out well with the
Ledwidge Lumber #0 Monte Carlo being one of the fastest cars during
practice. Shawn time trialed 2nd fastest and drew 7th to start the dash.
Shawn's car was suddenly very loose at the start of the dash and in turn
3 & 4 he got so loose he was up into the dirt and lost control as he
slapped the back end into the wall. A little disappointing but the
damage didn't ruin our night. Since Shawn did not finish the dash he
started 10th in the feature and quickly gained the lead on lap 21. Shawn
held onto that lead for 10 laps before Frank Fraser who had spun around
and was sitting still stopped him in his tracks in turn one. With no
where to go Shawn suffered a little damage on the right front and had to
pit. He then came back out to start 20th in the race and slowly worked
his way back up to 5th. Because the race winner, Dan Eddy, was
disqualified, Shawn finished 4th.

Race Weekend #10:
The Atlantic CAT Speedweekend at
Scotia Speedworld was a great success with decent weather and
tons of fans on August 12th & 13th! First and foremost we would like to
say thanks to all of the Shawn Turple fans who made it out for Friday
and/or Saturday nights' shows! You make it all worthwhile. The weekend
started out well with Shawn time trialing 4th fastest in the Atlantic
CAT Monte Carlo Pro Stock and drawing the outside poll for the 15-lap
dash, which is just where he finished. Shawn also jumped into the Forbes
Sportsman Monte Carlo to finish 5th in his heat and start 16th in the
Lockhart Truck Centre 100. Early on
in the main feature the Sportsman was backfiring so badly Shawn had to
bring it in to the pits during the first caution. Without enough time to
solve the problem Shawn went back out on the track only to lose his
fire. When he was pushed into the pits that time we knew it was a wiring
problem and were able to fix it but with no caution periods - Shawn went
at least 20 laps down. He was able to finish the race and if he had been
on the lead lap would have finished 4th - or maybe better. Saturday was
a foggy day with little practice and the big
Atlantic CAT 250. Starting on the outside poll, Shawn had a
good car and kept pressure on Johnny Clarke for the first 20 laps and
then momentarily got around him on the outside and lead a lap! Shawn
continued to have a good car all night and pitted twice for tires (2 at
a time). To avoid a wreck, Shawn slightly spun in turn 2 once the
caution was already out but apparently, or should I say miraculously,
went a lap down according to PASS officials who did not realize this
until at least 50 laps later when Shawn's number disappeared from the
number board when we thought we were racing in 2nd place. In the end, a
discouraged Shawn fell back from the leaders since he was a lap down and
finished in a respectful 6th place.

Race Weekend #9:
On Saturday, August 6th, the Atlantic CAT Pro Stock Team
was in Geary, New Brunswick, for the Carquest Maritime Pro Stock Tour's
Pro Line 100 - race 8 of 11. With good weather and a decent car, Shawn
time trialed 2nd fastest (for the 2nd time this year at NBIS) and drew
8th for the Dash. Shawn then finished 5th in the Dash, putting us in a
great starting position for the main feature (as the inside line was the
only line there was). It didn't take long for Shawn to be in the top
three once the green flag dropped and he managed to stay within the top
five throughout the caution-filled race. With 13 laps to go, Shawn found
himself in 2nd place and stayed there right until the checkered. It was
a very close finish with Shawn only one-five hundreths of a second
behind winner Shawn Tucker! Talk about a close call!

Race Weekend #8:
On Saturday, July 23rd, it was unknown whether or not we
would get the chance to race at Raceway Park in Oyster Bed Bridge on
Prince Edward Island. The rain came down, stopped and came down again,
eventually stopping for good. Giving the Maritime Pro Stock Tour just
enough time to run one practice to prepare for the
Atlantic Dodge Dealers 100. The car was
ok and so was the driver, qualifying 9th in a 25-car field where only 8
drivers would go to the dash. Shawn started on the pole of the first
heat and finished 2nd, starting 11th in the main feature. Early on,
Shawn was involved in an accident and because of a late-thrown caution
flag, went a lap down. Shawn pitted and came out only to get a Right
Rear flat tire. Eventually, Shawn stayed out of the pits and finished
the race in a decent 12th place. All in all we had a fun weekend and
Shawn learned more about the ol' race track that can reach out and bite
ya.

Race Weekend #7:
On Saturday, July 16th, we ventured up to Shediac, NB,
for the Parts for Trucks 100 at the Centre for
Speed. It was a nice weekend and we started out the day with
a flooding problem, which later turned into a wiring problem, which
finally was a very bad miss in the motor. The Atlantic CAT pit crew
changed everything possible including all the fuel in the gas tank
(there was water in it somehow), the fuel pump, MSD box, coil,
carburetor, etc, etc, etc. When Shawn went back out to race in the 1st
heat (he started 2nd) he quickly gained the lead and won! The miss was
gone, thank god. He then started 11th in the main and quickly jumped to
8th. Until a car spun in turn 4 and Shawn spun to avoid it. We then had
to go to the back (still scratching our heads on that one) and the car
was so good Shawn was the only guy to be passing everyone round the
outside! Yahoo. He was able to secure 3rd place
but wishes there would have been another 25 laps to grab the lead.
Shawn's exact first words after getting out of the car:
"Man that was FUN!" Everyone loves to
have a good car. Thank god for the hard working pit crew who pulled
through to make the #0 Monte Carlo work!

Race Weekend #6:
On Saturday, July 9th, we participated in the
Atlantic Dodge Dealers 100 and a Sportsman Super
Series 50-lap race at Scotia Speedworld. Before the rain
came, Shawn had fastest time by a tenth of a second! He set a new track
record for this year for the Maritime Pro Stock Tour with a time of
14.509 seconds. Shawn then drew the 4th starting position and finished
4th in his heat. The #72 sportsman was also working good as Shawn
started 6th in the 2nd heat and finished 3rd. He started the main
feature at around 9th or 10th and quickly grabbed the lead. He would
hold onto that lead until Mel Tibert, in the hooked up #01 car, would
pass him. The race got rained out on lap 44 with Shawn in
2nd place. The Atlantic Dodge Dealers
100 would have to wait until Sunday. On Sunday, Shawn started the race
in good shape quickly capturing 2nd behind Wayne Smith. After a few
honest attempts to get by, Shawn's handling slowly drifted away. During
the next restart, Shawn started on the outside and got freight trained
to around 10th or 11th. After a few accidents, Shawn pitted and worked
his way back up. It was discovered that the Right Rear bleeder was stuck
closed and the tire had 39 lbs of air in it - definitely going to mess
up the handling of the car. In the end, Shawn finished in
11th and received the EIT Race Radio
Rookie of the Race Award.

Race Weekend #5:
During the July 1st long weekend Shawn was on double duty
- first on Saturday it was the Maritime Pro
Stock Tour's stop at Oyster Bed Bridge in PEI for the Parts for Trucks
100. Then, on Sunday it was the
Vance Haines 150 at Shediac's Centre for Speed. Saturday was
the first time Shawn ever raced in PEI, and he's not so sure he liked
it. Shawn was off the pace to start the day, qualifying 22nd, and
starting 16th in the main. With two very different turns, it took a
while for Shawn and the car to adjust. Eventually the handling got
better and Shawn slowly worked his way up. He managed to slip through a
few wrecks but was horrible on the restarts. The clutch was slipping
something awful and he pretty near got run over every time. After a
couple of laps though, the car would pick up and he would make some
time. The #0 Team ended up with a decent 6th
place finish that was very close to being a 5th. On Sunday,
Frank and Shawn fixed the clutch, drew 4th in the second heat and
finished 2nd - putting him in the 4th starting position of the race. The
race was good with little cautions and a tight fight between Lonnie
Sommerville, John Flemming, and Shawn. In the end, the Atlantic CAT
Monte Carlo held out for a 3rd place
finish. All in all, another fun racing weekend - especially since Shawn
kept all the body panels on the car! Hee hee :)

Race Weekend #4:
Shawn Turple along with the #72 and #0 race teams had a
busy weekend in Halifax at Scotia Speedworld on June 25th. The only
racer on double-duty, Shawn earned a 2nd
Place Finish in the C&R Auto Supply
Sportsman Shootout 100 lapper and an awesome
6th Place finish in the
Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Forbes 200.
Qualifying 10th in the Time Trials, and finishing 9th in the Dash, Shawn
was off to a good start. Both races went well with only one caution
during the Sportsman race and just a few in the PASS. Shawn worked his
way around a number of competitors a number of times, pitted once for
right side tires, stayed on the lead lap, and worked his way up to a
respectful 4th position. If only lapped cars were taken out of the top 5
positions, Shawn may have just had a 3rd place finish or better - the
car never felt so good! However, the 34 degree heat, practices all day
long, and 300 laps affected Shawn and if there were only 10 less laps, I
know we would have been better off. Still, an impressive weekend!

Race Weekend #3:
On Sunday, June 19th, the rain-delayed
Parts For Trucks 100 took place at New
Brunswick International Speedway in Geary, New Brunswick.
What turned out to be a nice day truly was a great day for the #0 Pro
Stock Team. During practice, things weren't so nice however, as the car
just didn't want to handle. With quick thinking and a few smart changes,
the crew got the Atlantic CAT Monte Carlo working well for the time
trials. Shawn had the pole with a time of 13.681 seconds until John
Flemming knocked him down to second with a time of 13.649 seconds. We
were still very pleased to say the least. Shawn then drew 4th for the
Dash and finished 4th. As the long feature got started (it took 3 1/2
hours to run) Shawn was on the outside for quite some time. With 2 red
flag stops, and many cautions, Shawn held his line and stayed out of
trouble. Once he found himself in that 3rd position with only 5 laps to
go he wasn't leaving any holes on that inside lane. Shawn walked away a
happy man with a clean 2nd place finish.

Race Weekend #2:
On Saturday, June 4th, the
Pioneer Coal 100 took place at Riverside Speedway, Antigonish.
With beautiful weather and a full field of 31 pro stock cars, the day
was a nice one. It's too bad that track and Shawn just don't seem to get
along. Not to say we had a really bad day, but we didn't have a really
good one either. Anyway, here are the facts: Shawn time trialed 9th with
a time of 15.700 seconds putting him in the top ten for the dash. He
drew number 9 in the draw and finished 8th. During the autograph session
on the front stretch Shawn got a right rear flat tire that had to be
changed, this counts as a pit stop so he had to start at the back, yes
all the way back to 30th position. We started the main feature all right
with Shawn passing something like 16 cars in 19 laps. Shawn stayed out
of trouble for some time after that until he, Stacey Clements, and Daryl
Mahr went 3-wide on the back stretch and it didn't work out so well for
Shawn. Shawn spun and brushed the wall. Luckily, it was a long caution
because of some light trouble and our efficient pit crew was able to fix
the car and get Shawn back out on the track still on the lead lap. With
a bent hood it was hard to see and the bad luck just kept on coming.
Eventually, the race did end and Shawn only went a lap down with 2 laps
to go. We still however, managed to finish 11th, which wasn't too bad in
the end.

Race Weekend #1:
On
Saturday, May 28th, the Carquest Maritime
Pro Stock Tour and Scotia Speedworld kicked off the rain-delayed season
with the
Pro-Line 100, a Sportsman Super Series 50
lap race, and a Legends
feature. Shawn was on double-duty in his #72 Sportsman and Frank
Fraser's #0 Pro Stock. The day started out ok with Shawn time-trialing
8th and drawing the Pole for the Dash. With a few rookie mistakes Shawn
finished 10th in the Dash with the need for a left side mirror becoming
a priority. Shawn started 4th in his Sportsman Heat and won - putting
him on the pole for the main. During the main, Shawn was leading when he
felt his engine tightening up. He pulled into the pits just as the
engine quit. Not a good way to start the Sportsman season. The Pro Stock
feature went a little better - even without that left side mirror
- with no major accidents (not involving us anyway!) but got rained out
on Lap 60. We were happy to end the wet day with a
6th place finish.
